What They Do

  • Inspect, repair, overhaul and modify all types of automotive equipment
  • Repair, adjust and modify automotive cooling, air intake, carburetion, fuel, exhaust, electrical, drive train, brake line, frame, steering and suspension systems
  • Use and maintain common and specialized tools, basic garage hydraulic, mechanical and pneumatic equipment and oxy-acetylene welding equipment
  • Carry out the recovery of all types of vehicles used in the land forces, using standard towing trucks and complex specialized tracked and wheeled recovery vehicles
  • Drive all types of vehicles ranging from small jeeps to tank transporters
  • Prepare and process documents such as vehicle work sheets, individual time cards and parts request forms

Qualifications and Interests

VEH TECHs should enjoy detailed, methodical work with engines and mechanical equipment. They should be flexible and be able to follow instructions and ensure the work meets strict standards. Good hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity are important attributes. Physical strength, resourcefulness and the ability to keep clerical records are also desirable.

Working Environment

In static units, the Veh Tech normally works in enclosed, lighted and heated workshops. While in the field however, duties are performed in the open or in temporary or improvised accommodation under all types of weather conditions ranging from extreme heat to extreme cold and wet or damp conditions. The working conditions will include noisy and confined quarters and exposure to heat, dust, fumes and poor ventilation. The job has heavy physical demands; a Veh Tech must be tolerant of situations requiring stooping, lifting heavy weights, kneeling, crouching and standing for long periods of time. Mental stress is normal in static employment but increases considerably during exercises or operational conditions. Places of employment span all Canadian Forces bases and stations within Canada including the Arctic, and locations throughout the world in response to NATO and UN requirements.

Career Opportunities

Opportunities for career progression and advanced training are good for qualified applicants.
