Supply Technicians

Supply Technicians (SUP TECHs) are
responsible for ensuring that all the supplies necessary
for Canadian Forces operations are available when and where
required. The diverse material they handle includes: food,
fuel, heavy machinery, stationary and clothing. Purchasing,
warehousing, shipping, receiving and stock control are all
functions of this occupation.
What They do
- Receive, handle and prepare items for shipment
- Operate military vehicles and material handling equipment
such as forklifts
- Prepare invoices and shipping documents
- Order material from internal and external sources and
purchase supplies (by cash or contract)
- Deliver supplies to operational units
- Perform stock record keeping, stocktaking and inventory
control
- Maintain accounting and financial records
Qualifications and Interests
SUP TECHs must possess initiative and the ability
to organize and work independently. They must have at least
average physical strength and stamina. Accuracy and attention
to detail are necessary, clerical ability is helpful and
an interest in computer operations and systems will also
be an advantage. Adaptability and interests in a variety
of tasks are essential attributes.
Working Environment
SUP TECHs work in a variety of environments. The
majority are employed in an army field environment. When
employed in operational or forward supply installations,
personnel may be exposed to adverse climatic and environmental
conditions and are subject to the same living and working
conditions as the combat personnel.
SUP TECHs may also be subjected to long periods
of standing and physical exertion when handling supplies
and they may also be exposed to toxic or dangerous materials.
Basic Military Occupation (MOC) Training
SUP TECHs learn the following skills:
- Stocktaking
- Supply operations
- Material identification
- Preparation of requisitions
- Warehouse stock location system
- Use of material handling aids
- Military correspondence
- Processing issues and receipts
- Computer operation and maintenance
- Loan procedures
- Preservation and packaging of material
- Ration accounting
- Canadian Forces publication system
- Serially numbered material control and accounting
- Inventory control
Advanced and Specialty Training
Personnel who demonstrate the required ability and ambition
will undertake training through formal courses or on-the-job
training. Specialty training can be:
- Military Contracts
- Internal Audit Procedures
- Personnel Management
- Packaging Technician
- Instructional Technique
- Parachute packer/rigger
