Mobile Support Equipment Operator

The Mobile Support Equipment Operator (MSE OP),
or "Trucker" operates
military vehicles ranging in size from standard automobiles
to large trucks and all-terrain vehicles in order to ensure
the mobility of the Canadian Forces.
What They do
- Operate buses, automobiles, trucks and sometimes tractor-trailers
- Operate specialized mobile equipment such as fueling
tankers and all-terrain vehicles
- Receive, load, secure and unload material and equipment
by road
- Provide transportation for combat and field operations
- Maintain equipment in serviceable condition by cleaning,
inspecting and correcting minor faults
- Prepare dispatch schedules and co-ordinate user requirements
for vehicles and equipment
- Prepare and maintain forms, records and reports related
to the job
Qualifications and Interests
MSE OPs require good vision, co-ordination, spatial
perception and hearing ability. They should enjoy working
with machines and be capable of assuming responsibility
and working independently. They must also be tactful and
discreet. Clerical ability is a definite asset, particularly
in the higher rank levels where many records are required.
Personnel in this occupation should be adaptable and willing
to cope with a variety of employment and environments.
Working Environment
MSE OPs will encounter a variety of employment
and environmental conditions in this trade. Generally, personnel
will be required to operate a broad range of mobile support
equipment, day or night under all weather conditions. They
are subject to long, irregular hours, noise and vibration.
In the Service Battalion MSE OPs experience operational
living and working conditions and the same hazards as combat
troops.
Basic Military Occupation (MOC) Training
MSE OPs learn the following skills:
- Operation of both standard and automatic shift vehicles
including trucks, cars, and buses
- Operation of vehicle systems and components including
brakes, fuel, cooling, lubrication, electrical and ignition
systems
- Vehicle recovery
- Rope and cable maintenance
- Use of military maps
- The organization and layout of Drop Zones for the parachute
delivery of supplies and troops
Advanced and Specialty Training
Personnel who demonstrate the required ability and ambition
will undertake advanced training through formal courses
or on-the-job training as they progress in their careers.
